I Give You A Taste

First experimental stills from a new video in making.
Holding back ideas and putting them aside can only last a certain period of time. They rise again and pup up in all sorts of ways demanding to be explored. So today I finally started the first experiments on my bubble thin project concerning money. Scouting for locations in my studio and living room didn't live up when I suddenly realized to keep it simple. The sink! Okay, the eventual sink might be porcelain or even granite but for now the stainless steel works. While busy recording my main concentration was on the visual part but looking back and hearing the sound of the paper making its brisk, delicate sounds was something I did not expect to make such a impact! There is more to be unveiled...

I'll be your mirror, reflect what you are, in case you don't know

'Just a ordinary portrait shoot' I repeated to myself while I biked to the studio of Rene Bosch for the catalogue of DOGtime. Standing there surrounded by professional lighting I became a bit serious. I  wanted a flirtatious relation with the camera in combination with a high energy sparkle. Yeah right. It worked out okay, this is the image that will be send into the world as Dennis Verbeke one of the graduating fine art students of Gerrit Rietveld 2012. That thought didn't help me. And the lack of any other inspirational quote made me surrender to whatever happened. The rest of the portraits are very different in comparison to last years class. To Rene it became clear that we were a group of individuals. All unique and with a own style.

This was emphasized by the Elevator Pitch last friday where the mentors expressed that it would be difficult so summarize this year in text. They wondered if the visitors of the final exhibit next month would get a overall feeling of DOGtime. It made me think of myself while I listened to one of my playlists on iTunes. We connect sound with images in music videos so what would I look like if I had to select nine clips? What would content, and lyrics wise match with myself, my dreams my mirror? I started searching, YouTube is a endless resource of information. These are the nine tracks that I think represent me the best. If you would have to chose, which nine ones would you pick?

28 GB LOST

Making a performance with more people demands different rules and regulations. In this case my concept was about time, it's unpredictable but recurring state of beginning and end. And whatever happens in the meantime? A continuous force of elements that bounce off one another and creates new interactions. This performance was inspired by the loss of my entire digital music library! About 28 GB was wiped from my laptop at the time and was projected into the void! Now, a few years later my itunes uses 65 GB musical power for my pleasure. And this time it has been copied onto various external hard disks, together with pictures, videos and other documents. This performance ventilated my frustration at the time and with the use of the group materialized that I wasn't the only one to lose those digits...

Wine And Dine

First Concept Telescoping Dining Table with Birds

My interest in animal experimentation is a steady source that provides me with all sorts of visual imagery. In this attempt I would like to see a variety of birds that get together for a fancy dinner party. Arriving one after the other, to take up ever inch of free space they accumulate by sound and personalities a peak that will shatter all tableware. Leaving a complete and devastated mess behind. It would be fantastic to record this event in real time. The birds with their unpredictable behavior might count for some unexpected events. Will it work? Or is it a lost case to begin with? And should I make an attempt to get some serious SGI guys onboard?  Or it might be a mix of both, doves seem to be rather friendly in comparison with Toucans or other Parrots. So maybe they could be added in a digital way? I have to get more information about the possibilities and what species I would like to use. To be continued...

City Of Dreams

In this video i turn to Amsterdam from a slightly unusual point of view. That of my atelier at the Papenbroeksteeg in the city centre, where i climb the 16 staircases that leads to the highest part of the building. Other buildings demand their space, even at this level. But if you stand on the seventh step and turn around your efforts are rewarded with a look that could be hosted by characters from a J.M. Barrie book. The sounds from the streets are muffled, only the bells of trams reach this high up and mingle with that of the carillons. These two buildings (Royal Palace and the Magna Plaza) blend together to become the city of dreams.
